Rich SantaColoma ist ein amerikanischer Freund von mir*), den ich eigentlich aus ganz anderem Kontext kenne, und obwohl er nicht wirklich Deutsch spricht (außer wenn er will), hat er ein Exemplar von Zita S. bestellt (und bezahlt, nehmt euch ein Beispiel daran!). Um ihm die Sache etwas zu erleichtern, habe ich ihm auch noch das PDF zugeschickt, das Rich durch Google Translate laufen lässt, um ihm den Lesegenuss etwas zu erleichtern.
Während Google meist ganz brauchbare Ergebnisse liefert, ist doch die eine oder andere merkwürdige Entgleisung dabei: Dass Google den „Zugführer“ der Eisenbahn beispielsweise mit „Platoon Leader“ übersetzt, ist wortwörtlich betrachtet nicht einmal falsch, aber es gibt doch auch echte Merkwürdigkeiten. Betrachten wir zum Beispiel von Cramms und Nimoys Reflexion über die Michaelis-Kirchweih:
»Kirchweih«, sagte ich nur, »wir haben seit Samstag Kirchweih.«
»Und die Herrschaften verlieren keine Zeit«, konstatierte Nimoy
knapp, ehe sie einen Einfall hatte: »Aber natürlich ist es eine famose Idee!«
Auf den ersten Blick scheint das keine besonderen Fallstricke zu bergen, oder? Aber Google macht Folgendes daraus:
„Patron,“ I just said, „we have since Saturday Patron.“
„And the gentlemen lose no time,“ stated Leonard Nimoy just before she had an idea: „But of course it is a splendid Idea!“
Ich weiß nicht so recht, was in die Serverfarm von Google gefahren ist. Natürlich feiert man die Kirchweih am Namenstag des Schutzpatrons, aber diese Übersetzung ist doch ein wenig weithergeholt. Und Frau Nimoys Namen eigenmächtig um den Vornamen des Spock-Darstellers zu ergänzen ist gelinde gesagt… skurril.
Ich bin schon sehr gespannt, welch weiteren Stilblüten Rich begegnen wird.
*) obwohl er ein fehlgeleiteter Republikaner ist… 😉

I’ve finished your book, and have to say I was very impressed, and very entertained. You have successfully created characters with depth, and with realistic personalities. The player’s individual thought process was consistant to their characters. Then the placement of the mystery in the cultural, geographic, and chronological frame gave it color, and made it doubly interesting. And on top of all that, you made me laugh.
Finally the mystery itself: You kept me guessing to the end. But at the same time, the unfolding chain of events, and the observations of the players (and the reader), were at the same time both complex and logical… that is hard to do, or I would imagine it would be… yet it all worked in your novel.
But most of all it was fun. I put aside two other books I was reading, because every time I had a moment to myself, I wanted to pick up „Zita S.“, and see what would happen next.
